Why Yeti Run?
In Bhutanese folklore, the Migoi—or Yeti—is far more than a myth; it is a powerful guardian of the sacred high-altitude wilderness, particularly within the isolated valleys of Merak and Sakteng. For the semi-nomadic Brokpa herders, the Migoi represents an elusive, shaggy giant that avoids the scent of domestic fires and the sound of iron bells, fleeing deeper into the crags as human presence expands. To ask “Why Yeti Run?” is to witness the retreat of an ancient, animistic force from the advancing footprint of the modern world. Within this landscape, where mountain peaks are considered the abodes of deities, the Migoi’s flight reflects a deep cultural belief that as the dharma spreads and the wilderness is tamed, these primordial spirits must eventually vanish into the silence of the highest peaks, leaving behind only the haunting echo of a world that once was.
